About USD2CAD.ca

USD2CAD.ca is a free converter and reference site that publishes the daily Bank of Canada USD/CAD exchange rate, a historical chart going back to 2021, and plain-language guides on what banks and fintechs actually charge above the mid-market rate.

Where the rate on this site comes from

What the historical chart shows

The chart on the home page covers four time windows — 30 days, 90 days, 1 year, and 5 years — all built from the same Bank of Canada series. The 5-year view is downsampled to roughly 250 daily points so the page stays fast on mobile. Weekends are skipped because BoC does not publish on those days.

How provider fee comparisons are calculated

When this site says “Wise costs about 0.6% all-in”, here is the math behind that number:

  1. Pull the provider’s quoted send rate for a typical amount (e.g. US$1,000 → CAD) on a normal business day.
  2. Subtract it from the Bank of Canada mid-market rate on the same date.
  3. Add any flat transfer fee the provider charges.
  4. Express the total as a percentage of the source amount.

The same method is applied to RBC, TD, BMO, Scotiabank, PayPal, OFX, and Norbert’s Gambit through Questrade. Rates are spot-checked monthly. Any provider that materially changes its pricing gets flagged in the relevant article.

Last comparison refresh: May 2026.

Who runs this

USD2CAD.ca is a solo project by Jocelyn Lamothe, a Quebec-based software developer who got tired of watching his own bank quietly skim 2.5% off every US-dollar invoice he received. The site has no editorial team, no investors, and no affiliate deal that overrides the data — when a provider is recommended, it’s because the math says so.

What this site is not

USD2CAD.ca is not a brokerage, not a money transmitter, not a licensed financial advisor, not a tax professional. Rates shown are for reference and educational use only. Always confirm a quote with the actual provider before sending money. The site does not store conversion data or personal financial information — see /disclaimer/ for the full notice.
